Domaine de Labourdonnais Ltée

Domaine de Labourdonnais is a renowned estate in Mauritius. The origin of this property goes back to a concession mentioned in 1774. Later, this plot of land became a small estate where a sugar mill was built in the early 19th century.

The property was further developed over the years and was named “Labourdonnais” in 1839. Christian Wiehe was the administrator as from1848; this influential man of natable character among the Mauritian people, became the sole owner of the estate some years later.

Christian Wiehe was part of the Legislative Council and of the Chamber of Agriculture, and in 1856, he decided to start building the ”Château” which was completed in 1859.

Domaine de Labourdonnais is also a tribute to Mahé de Labourdonnais, one of the greatest French governors of Mauritius who promoted agricultural development under his administration. Today, this private property, with its majestic house, is part of the national heritage. The sugar estate has always been among the most innovative ones of its era. From the onset, it aspired to be a symbol of modernity and economic success; initially through the exploitation of sugar cane; its cultivation and processing, and later through its orchards becoming the largest fruit producer of the country. Since, DDL also houses a rum distillery which operates under the brand name Distilleries de Labourdonnais.
