Head of Debt and Global Finance
Main mission
In this senior role, you will be responsible for the end-to-end process of financing projects across multiple sectors and jurisdictions. You will play a critical role in shaping the financing strategy of projects, working closely with clients, senior stakeholders, financial institutions, and external partners to deliver of the financing of projects. The candidate will have deep expertise in debt products, financial structuring, credit risk along with a strong track record in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Key responsibilities
- As a product expert, the Head of Debt and Global Finance will be required to work closely with clients, credit risk team, treasury, business coverage to structure and execute long term debt financing transactions in Mauritius and Africa in line with the Bank’s strategy and credit policy.
- Debt Finance — Strategy and Execution
- Develop and execute the Bank’s debt strategy to drive business growth
- Lead the origination and execution of a wide range of debt products including term loans, corporate bonds, and revolving credit facilities.
- Ensure that the right financing structure and product(s) are being proposed to meet the client’s needs, including the right terms, conditions, financial and non-financial covenants which best suit the transaction proposal.
- Develop and test client’s financial models in line with global banking practice to assess client’s repayment capacity and debt capacity.
- Own the pricing models for the Corporate and Institutional Banking and Business Banking division and ensure that the products are funded and priced according to the Bank’s pricing policy.
- Approve interest rate and fee structure for each transaction according to the Bank’s pricing policy.
- Review and negotiate legal documentation with clients, legal counsels and/or facility agents to ensure that the Bank’s commercial and standard terms and conditions are appropriately covered a captured.
- Support and add value to the preparation of credit and business papers, including presentation to the Bank’s various governance approval committees.
- Client Relationship and Management
- Collaborate with Relationship — Managers within the Corporate and Institutional Banking and Business Banking Team to tailor financial solutions that meet clients’ needs
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key institutional, corporate and sovereign clients acting as a primary contact for negotiations and structuring of debt transactions.
- Represent the Bank in meetings with clients, facility agents or legal counsels to negotiate the terms and conditions of the debt finance facilities.
- Team Leadership and Development
- Lead deal teams by making sure the appropriate skill set is brought on board to ensure smooth transaction execution with agreed service level agreements.
- Lead, mentor and develop a high performing team in debt and global finance.
- Foster a culture of collaboration and excellence within the department
- Oversee recruitment, training and career development for junior bankers, ensuring that they are equipped with tools and knowledge needed to service.
- Develop and nurture relationships with key internal stakeholders including Treasury, Credit Risk, Business Heads as well as other product heads as well as key stakeholders at I&M Group.
- Risk Management and Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure that the debt transactions adhere to all regulatory requirements and the Bank’s internal credit and other policies
- Lead risk management activities relating to debt financing including credit risk assessments, pricing, structuring and liquidity considerations.
- Support the Recovery Team with advice to restructure existing distressed debt.
- Monitor market conditions, for instance price of commodities, share price, exchange rates, laws and regulations and identify potential risks whilst implementing strategies to mitigate the Bank’s credit, operational and reputational risks.
- Product Development and Innovation
- Spearhead the development of new debt-related products and services by leveraging financial technologies to meet evolving clients’ demands.
- Work with the internal teams to ensure seamless integration of debt products within the Bank’s broader financing offers.
- Financial Performance and Reporting
- Prepare short term plans and medium-term plans for the debt asset product, conduct variance analysis to budget and ensure timely report to Management.
- Manage the debt asset book and pipeline of debt transactions by ensuring timely execution of deals thus contributing towards achieving the Bank’s target.
- Present regular reports on performance of senior management.
- Minimum Qualifications Required:
- A bachelor’s degree in finance, Economics, Business or related field.
- A master’s degree or CFA or equivalent advanced qualifications are highly preferred.
- Minimum Experience/Knowledge Required:
- + 7 years’ experience in credit risk, debt or structured finance with a proven track record in origination, execution, and relationship management.
- An experience in Credit will be a plus including cash flow modelling techniques
- Strong experience with debt products including term loans, revolving credit and corporate bonds.
- Extensive knowledge of financial markets, global finance trends, and regulatory frameworks governing debt financing and capital markets.

- Strong people management skills with the ability to build and develop high performing teams
- Excellent negotiation and presentation skills.
- Strong knowledge of Loan Market Association (LMA) documentation
- Strong analytical and financial modelling skills with the ability to assess and structure debt transactions.
- Strong credit analysis skills.
- Proven ability to collaborate with senior executives, clients and cross-functional teams to drive business units.
